The trailer begins with the funeral of Bruce Wayne / Batman. The eulogy tells audiences that Bruce Wayne represented all that was good in Gotham as its protector and Knight. Wayne then passes on the responsibility of protecting the city and continuing his legacy to the Bat Family. The trailer shows off some slick moves from all four of the protagonists of the game. It also features villains Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Harley Quinn, and The Court of Owls.

The Gotham Knights

The plot of the game revolves around the death of Batman and the chaos that ensues following his demise. The vigilante group must come together to bring Batman’s murderer to justice and protect Gotham from villains looking to take over the city. Players can choose to play as Jason Todd aka The Red Hood, Dick Grayson’s Nightwing, Tim Drake’s Robin, and Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl in Gotham Knights. Although Damian Wayne will not be a playable character, he is still part of the story. Gotham Knights is a single-player game with a two-player cooperative multiplayer mode. It lets a second player drop in and out of the game without affecting the story’s progression. The game will have an RPG-style leveling system and each of the four characters will have a separate progression. Leveling up a character unlocks new abilities and also gear. Players can customize their character’s skills and gear to suit their own playstyle. The enemies in Gotham will match the level of the character. Missions will have suggested levels but will not be locked. Players can play through the main story but it will be somewhat hard to finish it while being under-leveled as certain bosses and enemies have fixed levels. There will be a heavy focus on the skills meter as it will be required to perform certain actions such as momentum abilities. Dealing damage and dodging attacks is how players fill up their skill meters. Each character will have a unique set of momentum abilities that can be unlocked through the skill tree. Gotham Knights will also have a day and night cycle. Players can only explore the city during nighttime and return to the Belfry during the daytime. The Belfry serves as the base of operations for the quartet. From the initial gameplay footage that has been shared online, it would be safe to say that the progression and combat mechanics of Gotham Knights will be more complex than the Arkham series games. Gear crafting and customized playstyles were not present in the previous Batman titles. How it all works will be something we will know once the game launches. Gotham Knights is a next-gen exclusive title and is coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on Oct. 21.
