The success of House of the Dragon may have increased fan interest in more GOT-related content. However, things may not be all good at HBO. There have been reports that two planned GOT spinoffs have been taken from the production list of the company working on the House of the Dragons. Only two of the four live-action projects related to Game of Thrones are currently listed with Startling Inc., HBO’s production partner for the franchise. Of the four GOT projects, only House of the Dragon and Dunk & Egg remain on the company’s roster. Nine Voyages of the Sea Snake and Ten Thousand Ships have been removed from the list of titles that the production outfit has been working on. According to the company website, Startling Inc. is a “library-driven development and production company imagining, discovering, developing, designing, packaging, selling, shepherding, producing and in all ways optimizing high-end entertainment content with a general emphasis on world-building IP.” Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon were both produced by Startling Inc. Vince Gerardis, one of the company’s founders is credited as one of the executive producers of GOT and HOTD. Nine Voyages of the Sea Snake is a prequel to House of the Dragon and will chronicle the youth of Corlis Velaryon. According to lore, a young Corlis Velaryon made nine great voyages on board the ship named The Sea Snake. The Master of Driftmark got his moniker “Sea Snake” from the name of his ship. Ten Thousand Ships tells the story of Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar as she leads her people to Dorne after their defeat at the hands of the Valyrian Freehold. Nymeria eventually marries Mors Martell who is Lord of Dorne during the time. The name Nymeria may be familiar to Game of Thrones fans as it is also the name of Arya Stark’s direwolf. Dunk & Egg, the sole remaining project under Startling Inc., is based on a series of novels written by George R.R. Martin and is set in the GOT universe. The series revolves around the characters of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). HBO has yet to confirm the cancellation of both prequel series. It’s possible that HBO found another production company to work on both projects. Either way, it’ll be a while before any GOT spinoff will premiere on HBO. The Game of Thrones prequel is all but guaranteed three more seasons of ten episodes each. The series will resume filming for the second season in early 2023. Hopefully, we’ll see the second season of House of the Dragon in 2024 on HBO Max.
