Earlier this year, Sony confirmed the PSVR 2 at CES 2022 before unveiling the headset’s design last week. Now, it appears that a release window for the PSVR 2 has leaked. According to PSVR Without Parole, a YouTuber who has a track record for leaking accurate details about the upcoming VR headset, the PSVR 2 will be available in Q1 2023. The same user refutes other claims that Sony will release the PSVR 2 for the holiday season, similar to the first PSVR. Instead, Sony will not rush the VR headset out to market in light of the ongoing PS5 shortage, giving it a release window of any time between January to March in 2023. While you’ll still want to pin this intel onto the “doubtful” tab, the rationale makes sense. The PS5 is still suffering terribly from the lack of available stock, which many believe is the reason why Sony is still producing the PS4 despite Sony’s insistence that this is not the case. Since users will need a PS5 to play the PSVR 2, it makes no sense to release the PSVR 2 if there isn’t enough PS5s to go around. Plus, Sony can avoid all the negative publicity if it releases the PSVR 2 during the holiday season and there’s still a lack of PS5 to go around. The good news here is that a Q1 2023 release date will buy Sony more time to work out the kinks of the PSVR 2 and guarantee that more devices will be available at launch. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Sony ramping up the marketing for the PSVR 2 in the coming months. This will likely not happen at the rumored March State of Play event, but Sony will probably reveal the price and launch titles for the PSVR 2 as we inch closer to Q1 2023.
