Why is the new PS5 model worse?

You’d be forgiven for not knowing that Sony has already released a new PS5 model. It came with very little fanfare and there are few visual differences. The most notable is probably that you can now tighten or loosen the stand screw by hand. However, what most people don’t know is that the new PS5 is lighter by a significant amount. The new PS5 model weighs at least 300 grams lighter compared to the original PS5. This isn’t something that you can just easily explain by a single screw. Luckily, YouTuber Austin Evans went ahead and answered everyone’s curiosity by dumping a load of cash into securing a new PS5 Digital Edition (model number: CFI-1100B) and shipping it from Japan to California to find out what exactly Sony changed. Upon further inspection, Evans found out that Sony took a huge chunk out of the console’s original heatsink. “God, I’ve got like half the heatsink,” says Evans, who was clearly surprised by what he found out. He added that this is not good, which explains why he used the title “The New PS5 is Worse” on the aforementioned video. Of course, bigger doesn’t always mean better. In this case, the inverse is also true. Smaller doesn’t necessarily mean worse as well. So, what’s the difference between the new PS5 model and the older one? Apparently, as per Evans’ Seek thermal camera, the new PS5 model runs at least “3-5 degrees warmer” while just running Astro’s Playroom. One might imagine just how much hotter the console is going to get if you’re playing something like Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut or Death Stranding: Director’s Cut. The only good thing about the new PS5 model is that its smaller heatsink runs quieter. Evans’ sound meter measures it at 42.1db as compared to the 43.5db of the older PS5 model. However, Evans added this isn’t “something you’re going to notice”. This suggests that the new PS5 model is more of a cost-cutting measure as Sony seeks to minimize building and shipping costs. It will be interesting to see how this will affect the longevity of new PS5 models compared to the original models. But, one thing is for sure, early adopters have a bit more reason to take pleasure that they bought a PS5 earlier than everyone else.
