With the ending of God of War teasing a much larger conflict between the father-and-son duo and other Norwegian deities, a sequel was all but guaranteed. Fast forward to Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase event, and fans were in for quite the treat.
Ragnarok is coming to Midgard in the God of War sequel
According to Norse mythology, Ragnarök is a series of catastrophic events that will ultimately destroy the entire world. The final battle will see gods, demons, and giants clash against each other, which will end with the death of the deities that once ruled over the nine realms. Of course, how exactly God of War: Ragnarok will interpret it remains to be seen. However, we do know that the in-game world is still very much ending. Revealed at the end of Sony’s latest showcase, God of War: Ragnarok teases a much larger adventure than the 2018 title. It also confirmed that Thor will indeed serve as the game’s main antagonist, as well as Freya. We can assume that the Norse gods will hold nothing back against Kratos and Atreus following the aftermath of the first game where, among others, Kratos laid waste to Baldur, as well as Magni and Modi. Ragnarok’s interpretation of Thor also makes an appearance in the trailer. Instead of the more hunky interpretation that audiences have seen in recent years, this Thor looks a lot like how the original Norse mythology describes him as a heavy drinker with an enormous appetite. Another thing that we learned is that Ragnarok will pick up exactly where the first game left off. The story is set just a few years later, with Atreus now much more capable than before. Santa Monico Studios revealed that Atreus will have new abilities, including a new Runic Summon. Of course, Kratos has a few tricks up his sleeve as well. From what we can see in the trailer, he’s a lot more savage this time around and looking a lot like the Kratos of old. We can see that he’s had more time to practice wielding the Leviathan Axe and his mastery of the Blades of Chaos remains just as superb as ever. But, a familiar boat will make its return, along with the ever-lovable Mimir’s head. Unfortunately, Sony did not share a release date in the trailer. However, earlier this year, we learned that the God of War sequel will release in 2022, which a blog post later confirmed. It will be interesting to see how well God of War: Ragnarok does, as it will release in the same year as Horizon: Forbidden West. We wouldn’t put it past Sony to push Ragnarok back to 2023 with the rumored God of War PC port taking its place in 2022 instead.
