After confirming the follow-up in April, Sony announced that the still-untitled sequel will be out in theaters on December 20, 2023, just in time to take advantage of the festivities. Sony did not include other details in its announcement, but we do know that at least part of the film will take place in New York City and feature the original Ghostbusters firehouse. After seeing Jason Reitman, son of the original Ghostbusters director, Ivan Reitman, pay his proper respects to the classic series while paving the way for a new generation, it would not surprise us if Sony brings him back along with the rest of the cast and crew. We’re happy that Sony is more open to sequels these days. Ghostbusters: Afterlife wasn’t a massive hit. The film just grossed a little over $200 million against a $75 million budget. This isn’t a massive take, by any means, but it seems to have reinvigorated interest in the iconic franchise. In addition to the Ghostbusters sequels, Illfonic, the brains behind Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, is working on Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is part of Sony’s massive slate of films for 2023, which includes:

Kraven the Hunter - January 13, 2023 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - June 2, 2023 Madame Web - July 7, 2023 Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 - December 20, 2023

On top of everything we just enumerated, Sony is also either confirmed or rumored to be working on live-action movie adaptations of Jak and Daxter, One-Punch Man, and Ghost of Tsushima, as well as a sequel to Uncharted. With so much going on all at the same time, Sony is showing confidence in its franchises. Hopefully, it can do everything justice.
