DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn spoke on Twitter to address various movie related questions from fans. Green Lantern was among the films brought up, and fans have been asking if the hero - and more specifically Ryan Reynolds - would be returning to the DC Universe. The Twitter exchange with fans started when Gunn shared a post celebrating the 44th anniversary of Christopher Reeves’ Superman film. One fan replied “Hey James, please tell us if we are gonna see a Superman? We’ve been starved of the greatest comic book character on the big screen for ages!” “Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority,” Gunn replied. The reply led to a number of other fans engaging with their own questions. Another fan asked, “What about the almighty Ryan Reynold’s green lantern?” Gunn had a firm reply, “That’s not a priority for me and even much less of one for [Ryan Reynolds].”
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) December 10, 2022 While Gunn is busy planning out the future of the DC Universe, Reynolds on the other hand is shaping his in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor is set to make his MCU debut in Deadpool 3 with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The addition of the duo to the MCU is rumored to usher in the era of mutants for Marvel Studios. Fans have been waiting for the X-Men to be added to the roster of MCU superheroes. Even Kevin Feige teased that Deadpool 3 brings us closer to having the X-Men. Gunn’s response didn’t quite put an end to the Lantern questions however. One particular fan insisted that Reynolds will come back to work for director Zack Snyder. “He was going to come back for Zack Snyder, just sayin,” the user tweeted. Gunn simply replied, “He wasn’t.”
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) December 10, 2022 The tweet from Gunn shutdown rumors of Ryan Reynolds returning as Green Lantern. It does, however, give fans hope for the return of Hal Jordan, albeit portrayed by a different actor. DC isn’t really one to stick to one actor for its superheroes unlike Marvel. The exchange between Gunn and fans of DC also gives us a glimpse into the future plans of the director for the DC Universe. Last week was particularly shaky for DC as there were reports that Wonder Woman 3 was canceled. Rumors also started to swirl around the cancelation of Man of Steel 2 and Batman 2, not to mention everything going on with Black Adam. Gunn recently addressed the rumors regarding the canceled movies saying that some of them are true while others are only partly true. The director did not disclose which movies were canceled. Industry insiders have reported that Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 has been canned in its current iteration. Deadpool 3 is coming to cinemas on November 8, 2024.
