More than 6 years since Abe re-introduced himself to the world with Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty!, Abe will, once again, lead the Mudokon revolution in Oddworld: Soulstorm. Scroll down below to learn more about this upcoming first-party PlayStation title.
Is There An Oddworld Soulstorm Trailer?
Following the success of the series’ reboot with 2014’s Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty!, Oddworld Inhabitants’ game designer, Matt Glanville, confirmed that they’d be working on a follow-up based on Abe’s Exoddus in 2016. Oddworld: Soulstorm finally made an appearance before E3 2019 where the developers demoed the title to the gaming judges during E3 Judges Week. However, it wasn’t until Gamescom 2019 that the game’s director, Lorne Lanning, confirmed either a 2020 or 2021 release date for the game. Then, in June 2020, the game was showcased even further as part of the Sony PlayStation 5 event, with a new trailer being unveiled at the Game Awards 2020. The latest trailer for Oddworld: Soulstorm was released during PlayStation’s February 2021 State of Play event.
What Is The Story of Oddworld Soulstorm?
Soulstorm, once again, centers on the unlikely hero that is Abe, who is now the leader of a growing revolution. Abe belongs to the species known as Mudokons, who, for years, have been oppressed by Glukkons and treated as slaves. However, after Abe finds out that Glukkon plans to turn his fellow men into food, Abe decides to rescue all the Mudokons that he can find before they’re all turned into meat, or so to speak. In Soulstorm, Abe has had a bit of time to build up his small revolutionary army. He’s even had enough success that the Glukkons have felt the need to try and weaken the rebelling Mudokons. In the game, their new method of choice is using a toxic concoction. By drinking this, Mudokons become mindless slaves. Referred to as the “SoulStorm Brew”, much of the story of the game then revolves around Abe’s attempt to put an end to the production of the drink. All the while, he’ll continue to free as many Mudokons from their Glukkon overlords. Gameplay-wise, Soulstorm will continue the platforming and puzzle-solving formula that has since made the franchise popular. Abe will still be able to climb, roll, run, and jump his way through the game’s weirdly unique environment as he tries to find more Mudokons to rescue. However, this time around, Abe is not alone. In addition to Abe, Soulstorm will let players take advantage of the Mudokons that Abe has saved to help him get past some of the most challenging aspects of the game. What’s perhaps most interesting about Soulstorm is that players have options when it comes to how they want to approach the game. They can go in guns blazing, or so to speak, or they can take the more pacifist approach. This open-ended gameplay paves the way to multiple playthroughs and a variety of interesting playstyles.
When is The Oddworld Soulstorm Release Date?
Oddworld: Soulstorm’s development has been plagued by multiple delays and budget constraints. However, the developers were finally able to complete the game and announce that it will officially make its debut on April 6. Oddworld: Soulstorm will be available on the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5, as well as the PC, starting on April 6. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet about making the game available on other platforms. Also, the PC version will be exclusive to the Epic Store. PlayStation 5 owners with an active PlayStation Plus subscription will also be able to download Oddworld: Soulstorm for free. The offer will start when the game launches on April 6 and will end on May 3.
What’s Next After the Oddworld Soulstorm?
The Oddworld franchise still has plenty of stories to tell and the developers would love to adapt it for modern consoles. In February 2019, Lanning discussed the possibility of a third Oddworld title. He said that it all depends on how well Soulstorm sells. Then, in May 2019, Oddworld Inhabitants teased that Oddworld: Soulstorm is the second game in a planned 5-game series.
