According to Variety, Netflix had initially reached out to the creators of That ‘70s Show, Bonnie and Terry Turner, about rebooting the show during the pandemic. At the time, the plan was for the husband-and-wife duo to come up with a story that will be set about two decades after the original show and in the same fictional town of Point Place. But Terry and Bonnie had only one response to give: No. Since the offer came during the COVID quarantine, however, the couple had plenty of time to consider it and change their mind. Eventually, they began to entertain the possibility of creating a follow-up show to the iconic show. Around the same time, Tom Werner from Casey-Werner, the group that revived Roseanne, also contacted the Turners to ask them about it and that further influenced their decision. Consequently, they agreed to a reboot, but only if they find a storyline that will be a natural follow up to the original show. Terry stated that it was initially difficult to find the right idea. As a result, they had to enlist the help of their daughter, Lindsey Turner, and one of the original show’s writers, Greg Mettler. Working together, they came up with a concept that fits perfectly and also served as a viable foundation for more seasons to come. That ‘90s Show is set in 1995 in Point Place, Wisconsin. It follows Eric and Donna’s 15-year-old daughter, Leia, on her summer visit to her grandparents, Kitty and Red Forman, at the Forman family home. While there, she met their next-door neighbor Gwen and her group of friends, who made her fall in love with the town and expand her short visit into a long one. Apart from Smith and Rupp, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Mila Kunis, Aston Kutcher, and Wilmer Valderrama reprise their roles as Eric Forman, Donna Pinciotti, Jackie Burkhart, Michael Kelso, and Fez respectively. However, newcomers Callie Haverda, Ashley Aufderheide, Mace Coronel, Maxwell Acee Donovan, Reyn Doi, and Sam Morelos will play Leia, Gwen, Jay, Nate, Ozzie, and Nikki. The show was created by the Turners alongside Mark Brazill. Apart from That ‘70s Show, Netflix has revived several old series. These include Full House, The Magic School Bus, Lost in Space, Mr. Show with Bob and David, which are rebooted as Fuller House, The Magic School Bus Rides Again, Lost in Space, and W/ Bob and David. By the way, the platform’s spin on The Addams Family, Wednesday, has overtaken Stranger Things as the English show with the biggest-ever opening week. And in another record breaking event, the platform’s most recent blockbuster project Glass Onion: A Knives Out mystery is now Netflix’s highest-grossing limited theatrical release. Finally, the streaming giant has reportedly greenlit a new spinoff of The Witcher, although there is scarcely any other information on the purported project. That ‘90s Show is scheduled to release on Netflix on January 13, 2023.
