The series premiere will consist of two episodes and has an expected run time of three hours. The first season will have eight episodes with succeeding episodes being released on a fixed schedule every Friday at 12 AM EDT / 5 AM UK. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is a prequel to the LOTR trilogy and is set in the second age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. The timeline is thousands of years before the events in the Lord of the Rings movies and around the time when Sauron had Rings of Power forged.
The Rings of Power
There are 20 Rings of Power in total, with the ‘One Ring’ that had the ability to control the wearers of the others. The lesser rings were distributed to the rules of Middle Earth: three for Elven Kings, seven for Dwarven Lords, and nine for Kings of Men. The plot of the series revolves around the Dark Lord Sauron and the creation of the rings. We also get to know the recipients of the rings and how they became corrupted by the One Ring’s power. The corruption of the One Ring eventually led to the War of the Last Alliance. After the defeat of Sauron, the One Ring was lost for centuries, which sets up the events of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
The Second Age of Middle Earth
The setting of the Rings of Power series will be the Second Age of Middle Earth. Audiences will get to explore the vastness of the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien in all its glory. Fans of the series will also get to immerse themselves in the diverse races, cultures, and kingdoms of Middle Earth. We will see the rise and fall of great kingdoms and the struggles between good and evil. Being one of the most expensive series ever made, with the first season costing rumored to cost $465 million, the world Tolkien wrote about is expected to come to life in spectacular fashion. Most of the expenses were building the infrastructure for the rest of the show as it is slated for 5 seasons.
