In the follow-up to 2017’s cute and atmospheric horror title, Little Nightmares, the developers have yet again told another rich story, not via dialogue, but through surreal images that help make the first game’s creepy and interesting lore even more shocking. Unfortunately, most gamers might be too busy trying to shake off the heebie-jeebies to try and make sense of it all. In particular, that ending. Scroll down below to read more about what the Little Nightmares 2 endings mean, as well as how they connect to the first game.

What is Little Nightmares 2 All About?

First things first, let’s start with a refresher of Little Nightmares 2. Little Nightmares 2 puts players in the shoes of a young boy named Mono, who journeys through the Pale City to find out the reason behind the world-disrupting humming transmission. However, Mono will not be alone. The female protagonist from Little Nightmares, Six, will return as a companion as the two of them go from one creepy place to another. Similar to Little Nightmares, Little Nightmares 2 sports very little dialogue if any at all. Nothing really explains what the events of the game mean, let alone the ending. At least, not outright anyway. However, it is possible to piece together the game’s lore by paying close attention to the numerous details spread throughout the game.

How Does Little Nightmares 2 End?

Little Nightmares 2 spends the entire game essentially reminding players that both Six and Mono will never leave each other alone. There are multiple instances in the game where Six saves Mono from dying. Thus, right near the ending of the game, when Six makes a big jump and successfully catches Mono just as he’s about to fall as she’s done numerous times already, you’d think that the game will end with the two walking off the proverbial sunset. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. In a surprising twist of events, as Six saves Mono, she decides to let go and let Mono fall off into the deep crevasse to be consumed by the very blob of eyeballs out to get them.

Why Did Six Let Mono Fall Off and Die?

If, like many, you decided to turn the game off after Six seemingly betrayed Mono, well, you’re in for an even bigger surprise. Because Mono is no longer wearing the hat that he’s worn for much of the game, Six is finally able to take a closer look at her young companion. Then, as she rescues her from falling off, she’s able to take an even closer look at Mono, which might help explain why she did what she did. As it turns out, Mono grows up to become the Thin Man, the main antagonist of Little Nightmares 2. So, apparently, now that she’s able to see Mono for who he really is or what he’s about to become, she decides to kill Mono before he becomes the man or creature that’s been hunting them down all this time.

What’s Different in the Little Nightmares 2 Secret Ending?

Now, the secret ending doesn’t really add a lot of content to Little Nightmares 2, but all the new sequences are important. Basically, just after we see the Thin Man rise from where Mono sat down, the scenario changes to Six emerging from a TV set. This seems to confirm that she’s successfully escaped the Pale City when, out of the blue, a glitched version of Six appears as the two stare each other down. It’s a slight change, but just a few moments later, we see the camera pan to a picture of the Maw, the main location of Little Nightmares. Just right after this happens, the glitched version of Six disappears and the game ends. So, what does this all mean? Well, we aren’t quite sure just yet. However, this does open up the possibility that Little Nightmares 2 isn’t actually a sequel. Rather, it’s a prequel that helps explain how and why Six goes to the Maw. The fact that the game shows us exactly when and how Six got her signature raincoat, which she sports for much of Little Nightmares, suggests that this is truly the case. Of course, the only ones who know what happened are the game’s developers. Whatever the case truly is, it’s safe to say that the developers have the entire gaming community intrigued and eagerly waiting for a possible DLC that helps tie up this surprising cliffhanger while cleverly setting up the series for a third title.
