Since then, Naughty Dog has ported the game over to the PS4 and released a sequel. There are also rumors of a PS5 remake currently being in development. Having said that, it was only a matter of time before some studio decided to pick up the story of The Last of Us and make a movie or a TV series based on it. The latter is exactly what’s happening with HBO’s live-action adaptation of the award-winning two-game video game franchise. HBO first announced The Last of Us TV series back in March 2020 before landing its main characters in February 2021. Fast forward to today and HBO has finally released the first-ever image of The Last of Us TV show. As you might expect, it’s every bit as harrowing and amazing as you’d expect.
Fans finally got their first look at HBO’s Joel and Ellie
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are going to take on the roles of Joel and Ellie, respectively, in the upcoming TV show that’s based on the eponymous PlayStation exclusive. Unfortunately, HBO’s image doesn’t show the faces of the actors. However, the photo gives audiences a good idea of just how serious the show is at wanting to do a faithful recreation of the video games. Ellie and Joel’s outfits are on point. Then again, this shouldn’t come off as a surprise. The game’s writer and director, Neil Druckmann, is also going to direct and write HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us along with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin.
The @HBO adaptation of @Naughty_Dog’s The Last of Us is full steam ahead! Can’t wait to show you more (from all of our projects!) Happy #TLoUDay!!! pic.twitter.com/trq9N340FW — Dr. Uckmann (@Neil_Druckmann) September 27, 2021 What’s interesting about the photo is the downed airplane over the hill. It’s not clear if this will serve as a major plot point in the first season of The Last of Us or if it’s just a staged image that the showrunners used to highlight the current state of the world in the show. If it’s the former, then it will be unique to the TV show. Airplanes were not featured prominently if at all in either one of the two The Last of Us games. With each episode of the first season reportedly costing HBO $10 million to produce, we know for sure that money is the least of The Last of Us’s worries. Only time will tell if people are going to remember The Last of Us as one of the best video game adaptations or one of the worst. Speaking of, another live-action adaptation of a critically-acclaimed PlayStation exclusive is currently in the works. Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that Chad Stahelski had signed on to direct a live-action movie adaptation of Sucker Punch productions’ Ghost of Tsushima. The first season of HBO’s The Last of Us is scheduled to release in 2022.
