Having said that, the John Wick director shared something interesting about the incoming live-action adaptation of the open-world samurai game. Speaking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Stahelski revealed that he wants to do a film that’s “all in character.” Stahelski then explained why he thinks this is a good idea, saying “It’s a Japanese thing about the Mongols invading Tsushima island. A complete Japanese cast, in Japanese.” While Stahelski’s desire is a cause for concern, it’s not necessarily a bad thing either. Case in point, 2019’s Parasite, a film shown entirely in subtitles in countries all over the world. It led the way at the 92nd Academy Awards with four wins: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Make no mistake, we’re not saying that Ghost of Tsushima will enjoy as much critical acclaim, but we wouldn’t count it out either. If nothing else, Stahelski seems adamant about making it happen. Given Stahelski’s track record with the John Wick series, which is getting a fourth film next year, we have no reason to doubt his capabilities. Sucker Punch released Ghost of Tsushima at the tail end of the PS4’s lifecycle in 2021 with an expanded version coming out in 2021 for the PlayStation 5. Ghost of Tsushima was both a critical and commercial success. More importantly, the Japanese government sees Ghost of Tsushima as a culturally significant game. The game’s developers have since been turned into ambassadors of the titular island. Speaking of Sucker Punch, recent job listings suggest that the studio is already working on Ghost of Tsushima 2. Also, the developers confirmed that it’s not interested in working on a Sly Cooper game anytime soon.
