As it did with the initial trailer, FFXVI turned a lot of heads as Square Enix revealed more details about its setting as well as the conflict that will help shape the world. With Final Fantasy 14’s Naoki Yoshida helming the project and backed by Creative Business Unit III, the upcoming PS5-exclusive will feature epic battles between popular summons like Ifrit, Shiva, and Titan, among several others. Unfortunately, Square Enix also confirmed at the latest State of Play showcase that FFXVI isn’t coming out later this year. If nothing else, the 3-minute-long “Dominance” trailer is a nice consolation for a game that would have been the perfect way to cap off Final Fantasy’s 35th-anniversary celebration in December. Instead, fans will have to wait until the Summer of 2023 to enjoy the sixteenth mainline Final Fantasy installment. Square Enix initially pushed back the release date of Final Fantasy 16 in December, citing complications resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, in April, Yoshida teased that a new trailer for FF16 would come out soon. Now that it’s here and the release window is out in the open, we can assume that Forspoken is coming out in October after a slight delay. Hopefully, news about Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is next. Long-time Square Enix director, Yoshinori Kitase, revealed in February that he’s hoping to reveal more news about the game later this year. Fingers crossed, a trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 will serve as the highlight of the game’s 25th anniversary. Either way, the latest Final Fantasy XVI reveal confirms that we’ll have a while to wait until we get our hands on any new game from the seminal fantasy video game franchise.
