Given how successful The Master Chief Collection has been, fans wondered for years if Microsoft and Xbox are thinking about giving some of its iconic franchises the same treatment. Fast forward to today and there are reports suggesting that Microsoft is working on this right now. Xbox Era podcast host, Nick Baker, got the rumor mill churning after he said that “another Microsoft franchise” will get “the Master Chief Collection treatment.” Unfortunately, Baker stopped short of revealing more information. But, Tom Warren of The Verge later tweeted that “the gears are really turning on this rumor”, which many readers took as proof that a Gears of War remaster collection is coming.
— Tom Warren (@tomwarren) January 24, 2022 The Xbox is sorely lacking exclusives. This has almost always been the case when compared to PlayStation and Nintendo. However, Microsoft does have a few exclusives up its sleeve. Case in point, Gears of War and Halo. Since Halo already got The Master Chief Collection, we wouldn’t be surprised if Gears of War got the same treatment. It’s not just because Warren alluded to it, but it’s long overdue. The influential third-person cover shooter series spans five games and two spin-offs in Gears Tactics and Judgment. Furthermore, a sixth mainline installment on Unreal Engine 5 is a definite possibility within the next few years. With zero new Gears of Wars releases between now and then, The Coalition and Microsoft might want to tide fans over with a Gears of War remastered bundle. Coincidentally, Baker’s report comes just days after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirmed that he’s working on a new video game movie. Some believe that Johnson’s next project is a live-action adaptation of Gears of War. If so, Microsoft might announce both the movie and the remastered collection later this year ahead of its 2023 release. Of course, this is all just speculation, so take everything you just read with a grain of salt.
