Unsurprisingly, the plot was never the series’ strong suit. However, the core gameplay was fun and popular enough to spawn several mainline installments and a handful of spin-offs. Unfortunately, the franchise’s popularity would die out in the late 2000s. Sony attempted to reboot the series in 2012, but it wasn’t enough. Fast forward to 2021 and it appears that Sony wants to try again.

Is the Twisted Metal revival by Lucid confirmed?

Lucid Games don’t exactly have the strongest track record. In recent years, Lucid worked on Need for Speed Payback, which it only co-developed, and Destruction AllStars, which was a so-so exclusive for the PS5. However, for some reason, Sony is trusting Lucid with the keys to the Twisted Metal franchise. According to a VGC report, several sources close to the upcoming revival claim that Lucid is going to work on a Twisted Metal revival. VGC added that the game is already early in its development stage. Sony expected the game to launch in 2023 to coincide with the Twisted Metal TV series. The most interesting part here is that the report claims that Lucid is working on a free-to-play Twisted Metal game. Sony isn’t exactly well-known for releasing free-to-play titles, especially if it’s an exclusive. We doubt that it’s going to start soon. But, who knows? Sony might know something that we don’t and see a free-to-play route as the best way to relaunch Twisted Metal for modern audiences. With that said, this isn’t the first time that rumors of a Twisted Metal remake have popped up. The early Twisted Metal games were some of the best PlayStation games of all time. Not to mention, after a dismal outing with Destruction AllStars, Lucid will want to redeem itself. With two years to work on an established IP as well as experience working on racing games, Lucid could very well bring some much-needed life back to Twisted Metal.
