According to a Bloomberg report, SEGA is digging deep into its coffers and catalog of titles to find a hit like Fortnite. It’s unclear why SEGA is specifically singling out Epic Games’ hit battle royale title, but we don’t exactly blame the longtime video game publisher. Fortnite is one of the most lucrative properties in gaming, with more than 250 million players helping Epic earn billions in annual revenue. Although SEGA probably isn’t going into the battle royale space with a Fortnite-like game, a crossover-friendly big-budget project isn’t outside the realm of possibility. If nothing else, SEGA might be creating its own video game universe where crossovers are frequent and plentiful. The same report states that SEGA’s European studio is working on a first-person “Super” game that we presume will also tie into the company’s plans to revive Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. However, the publication’s sources warn that SEGA isn’t above canceling both Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio reboots. Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio are older SEGA properties that were popular in the 2000s. The former, in particular, was a huge hit in arcades where players found enjoyed ferrying passengers across town as fast as possible, all the while listening to music at the time. The latter never reached the heights of Crazy Taxi (at least, in terms of getting multiple installments), but it’s a colorful and flashy game with rollerblading that received critical acclaim and commercial success for the SEGA Dreamcast. If only to play devil’s advocate, SEGA’s deep dive into the live-service arena is in line with what SIE CEO, Jim Ryan, said about live-service titles being the future of gaming. How crazy would it be if Sony’s rumored big acquisition was SEGA? We’re not saying that it’s happening, but who are we to deny that it might? Either way, with SEGA still in the early stages of planning its Fortnite-like future, it might be a while before we start to hear more about what it has in store for fans.
