Avatar: The Way of Water just reach a staggering $1 billion in ticket sales in just fourteen days after the movie premiered in theaters. The film premiered on December 16 in the US, with international screenings happening two days earlier. The movie achieved this milestone despite earning below the estimated ticket sales for its opening weekend. The second weekend of the movie showed that the James Cameron flick had massive staying power and is set to have a long theatrical run. Avatar 2 is only the third film to surpass the $1 billion mark after Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion. The Top Gun sequel starring Tom Cruise took 31 days to reach the milestone. On the other hand, the third Jurassic World film headlined by Chris Pratt took a little over four months to breach the $1 billion mark. Avatar: The Way of Water becomes the fasted movie to hit the mark since Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third Spider-Man movie featuring Tom Holland only took twelve days to achieve the feat. The Avatar sequel is one of only six movies in history to reach $1 billion in the first two weeks since its release. By comparison, 2009’s Avatar took 19 days to reach the $1 billion mark and it stayed atop the box office for seven consecutive weeks in the United States and 11 weeks in foreign shores. Just like the original, Avatar: The Way of Water needs to top the charts for several more weeks to reach its target. Avatar: The Way of Water is currently the second highest-grossing film of 2022 with its current total of $1.025 billion. The movie bumped the Jurassic World sequel from second place with its $1.003 billion gross earnings. We expect that Top Gun: Maverick will end the year in the number 1 spot as it still has a commanding $400 million lead as of writing. Avatar: The Way of Water still has a long way to go before it can challenge the original Avatar’s record as the highest-grossing film in history. The 2009 film reached a staggering $2.97 billion in ticket sales worldwide after multiple rereleases. The future of the Avatar series is hinged on Avatar: The Way of Water having a big theatrical run. Three more movies are planned for the James Cameron blockbuster series. Avatar: The Way of Water is currently screening in theaters and IMAX. If all goes well, we’ll be able to watch the threequel, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, when it comes out in theaters on December 20, 2024.
