A recent report claims Activision Blizzard is changing the name of the free-to-play game to “Warzone Caldera” on November 28 as it makes way for Warzone 2. This also confirms that Activision Blizzard will not abandon the original shooter. The timely info comes just a week ahead of the Next showcase and around the same time that Activision confirmed Warzone Mobile.
Warzone will be renamed to “Warzone Caldera” on November 28th. pic.twitter.com/lA5M84RLS7 — Tom Henderson (@Tom_Henderson) September 9, 2022 Franchise fans will know the name Caldera all too well. Activision introduced the Pacific map last year alongside the first season of Call of Duty: Vanguard. If nothing else, the leak corroborates what Activision previously said about how Warzone 2 will coexist with Warzone. Specifically, Activision mentioned that Warzone will “continue on as a separate experience that will include a continuation of player progression and inventories within that Warzone experience.” When you consider that in-game cosmetics from Warzone will not carry over to Warzone 2, it makes a lot of sense for Activision to keep supporting Warzone. If the name holds up, it might signal Activision’s plan to pursue an 80s and 90s setting with the original Warzone. This will allow Warzone 2 to focus on a modern setting or even try a futuristic theme as it continues collaborating with the mainline Call of Duty games starting with Modern Warfare 2. Curiously enough, a recent leak suggests that Warzone 2 will come out on November 16. You’d think that Activision will time the renaming with the release of Warzone 2. But, these things aren’t always set in stone. It could be that Activision wanted to launch Warzone 2 on November 16 only to change plans last minute and move it to November 28. Regardless of the truth, fans can look forward to the upcoming Call of Duty event, Next, on the 15th. Activision has promised to reveal more details about Warzone Mobile, Warzone 2, and Modern Warfare 2, among several others, at the showcase. Also, those who are looking forward to Modern Warfare 2 still have time to play it before everyone else. Pre-order the game soon and jump into the open beta on September 16 and the single-player campaign just days before it comes out for everyone on October 28.
